Yay!!! More Great Music

Honour and I haven’t had a chance to hang out much together lately. She’s a very busy lady and I have been an SL slug. *grin* But we stay in touch and we still look out for each other. One way we do that is to pass on information about life performers or events that we think the other will enjoy. Many years ago Honour practically FORCED me to come join her to hear one of her favorite blues performers – Von Johin. You know how THAT turned out – I am a Vonette to this very day! Recently I had the great good fortune to find Ziffy Zarf and tell Honour that she needed to hear him perform. Now Honour is a Ziffy groupie too. A few days ago I got an IM from Honour, thanking me for the Ziffy-tip and telling me that I needed to track down Alex Mays. Okay – it’s really AlexMays Resident, because Alex is relatively new to SL. Wow, am I glad he is here. He’s GREAT!!!

I had logged on to catch some music and say some hellos and relax. I was just about to tp to a different show when I saw that Alex was performing at Sterling Music park at Sterling Vineyard. I figured this was the perfect opportunity. It took one song. Actually, that’s not true. He was only several bars into the first song when I wrote to Lalo and said – OMG – this guy is GOOD! If I could have reached through the space/time continuum I’d have dragged Lalo inworld to join me. After 3 songs I gave the headset to my husband and said: LISTEN! He agreed – a very very good blues rocker. 🙂 According to Alex’s profile, he plays acoustic and electric guitar, playing Blues, Rock, Jazz, country and much more. He also plays many original tunes and I have to say that I thought they were strong and good music. He has a listening booth set up in world here.

I joined Alex’s group before his set was over. 🙂 Bamboo liked him too. Check him out. And Alex – oh welcome welcome WELCOME to SL!!!! Delighted to have you here!

Loving the Live Music

I joined two more music groups last night! I don’t know where I have been that I have never heard of Taunter Goodnight before (doesn’t that sound like a James Bond name?) but oh my! what a huge oversight that was!! Taunter is FANTASTIC!! Superlative. Wonderful. Amazing. I was looking for something to do last night, chatting with Lalo to see what music might be happening (we have discovered that we both enjoy following the good music around the grid). As we chatted, my Live Music Enthusiasts group posted:

Taunter Goodnight LIVE @ the Drunken Drow! 5pm!!!!
Pure honey dripping with sultry seduction…! She will seduce you with her renditions of Pop, Blues, Classic and Alternative Rock!

I said “let’s try something different, this sounds good”. So we headed off to the Drunken Drow.

I thought I’d been there before, but if I have, either it’s been remodeled or I didn’t cam about. I’m SURE I’d have remembered the aquarium. I do like fish. 🙂 It’s a great venue. I KNEW I was on the right track when I saw Lin Ochs tp in. Lin owns a great music venue himself: Up the Creek in Houses. I am there regularly for my Komuso Tokagawa fix. I see Lin at other venues as well so I know we have similar musical tastes. Lin promised I would not be disappointed and oh my was he right. Yes, Taunter OWNS Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”. As well as several Bonnie Raitt tunes, and Linda Ronstadt and yes, she even does a fantastic job on ZZTop’s “Tush”, just to name a few. Ah, Taunter, I think I’m in love. *grin*

Not only does Taunter sing in a rich, warm, solid, pitch-perfect voice, but she has great crowd banter as well. So not only do you love the singing, but you are smiling and grinning from the chat as well. I met the host of Drunken Drow, Raredread Nightfire, a charming gentleman. All in all it was a wonderful wonderful evening and I know that I will be back there.

After a great performance like that, sometimes it’s hard to go and hear other music. But the night was still young and there was still time for dancing and chat, so we headed over to FogBound, which seems to be turning into my home-away-from-home these days. 🙂 There was more live music happening there: BigJim Allerhand and Tabasco Delicioso (BigJim Adam and John Stilwagen in RL). They played some amazing “swampy” blues. Great voice, fantastic music, and again great crowd banter and rapport. So what else can a gal do but join the group so she can follow them about?

SL is full of incredibly wonderful live music. Get out there (in here?) and listen.

Von Johin at Key West

I’ve been following the music about SL lately. Either I’m in a music-state-of-mind or the performers and DJ’s are all in perfect grooves. Last night I tp’d to Key West to hear Von Johin play. The really good performers never bore you, never play the same-old, same-old. I don’t remember the first song Von played, but what I remember was that I’d not heard him play THAT song before, and he did a great rendition (of course). His second tune was a medly – bits and pieces of many many songs all concatenated seamlessly into a fantastic song. I’d been sitting there a bit “meh”, but by the end of that tune I was grinning and feeling very upbeat!

I also learned something I never knew. I have an applause gesture. I use it all the time, usually while I’m dancing. I was sitting this particular evening, NOT dancing. I applauded. Well. I had no idea that the gesture actually moves my hands as well as makes a clapping sound. LOL. Makes sense, no? “gesture” “applause” But I’m always dancing, and that animation overrides the clapping. When I applaud, I smile and clap my hands.

You may notice the gentleman levitating in the air next to me. I am not sure if he was simply in a Zen state or if he was practicing for the upcoming Rapture. I was so absorbed in the music and IMs that other than the levitating meditater, I didn’t notice the rest of the crowd. I should have paid more attention because 2 friends from my NCI days were there in the audience! Shortly before the end of the concert, Aa came over to join me. I swear, that man gets younger every day! *grin* You’re looking great, Aa!

Always The Right Time For This

It is too early for Christmas carols. Yes, it is. Too early for the local radio station to be all carols all the time. Let us eat the turkeys first, please. But… my plurk friend posted this today. It is never to early to stand and sing Hallelujah, no matter WHAT your belief or lack thereof.

That, my children, is what proves the mettle of a true soprano – the ability to stand up there FIRST, ALONE, and hit those glorious notes. I’m watching for the 4th time in a row and she STILL gives me chills. Just watch the smiles spread on the crowd. You have to love the bass carrying the wet floor sign. *grin* Look at the rapt expressions. Look at the joy spread by people singing together. All those shopping bags, the junk food, the possessions – watch the music transcend that all. I wonder how many of those people singing sitting down are former choristers who have NEVER forgotten their part or their cues. I know *I* remember mine (alto). (Check out the gentleman in the unzipped gray sweatshirt sitting down – I’m guessing tenor.)

When Chestnut Plurks

Slowly but surely my health is returning. About time, too, I say. Last night I was taking a break from my book, catching up on Plurks, emails and the like. Then THE plurk posted: Chestnut listening to Kyle Beltran at Tribeca…. Come dance with me.

When Chestnut invites me to dance with her, I can’t refuse. Apparently, neither can Sean. Within minutes, there we were. (Okay, to be fair – Sean was there, but not dancing. *grin*) Dancing with Ches, listening to Kyle, laughing with friends. A lovely evening. 🙂 Thanks for inviting us to the party, Ches!!! ❤

Time to Lend a Helping Hand

I don’t really care what the media reports: I don’t think the economy is turning around all that quickly. We are all feeling the problems of a slowed, stumbling economy. But some people are getting hit worse than others. Cypress Rosewood, an SL musician is having an especially poor 2010. It was just a few months ago his home was burglarized, his musical equipment stolen. Thanks to some good fortune and quick-thinking friends, most of the equipment was ultimately recovered. But not all. And there was damage. So it seems particularly cruel fate that the flooding in Nashville, Tennessee has cost Cypress his home and store. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start to heal the world. I have no doubts this week. I’m doing what I can to help Cypress Rosewood.

The following is lifted verbatim from Honour McMillan’s blog, with her permission:

Over the past weekend Cypress Rosewood lost his home and shop to the devastating floods in Nashville Tenn. Friends of Cypress have responded and are calling for a benefit held this Fri Please note times we hope you can stop by and give some support to one of SLs’ beloved musicians.

Just look at the line up of great SL Musicians appearing at the benefit:

* Von Johin
* Arman Finesmith
* Skye Galaxy
* Senjata Witt
* Frets Nirvana
* Gina Stella
* Anek Fuchs
* Bluemonk Rau
* Joaquin Gustav
* Kolor Fall
* Zachh Cale
* Moondoggirl Moomintoog

This has been a tough year in terms of disasters and a tough one economically. It’s been tougher on some than others. We can’t fix all the problems of the world or make all the bad stuff go away but we can help one of our own. The fact that we can also enjoy an amazing lineup of musicians is the gravy. 🙂

If you can make it to Mardi Gras Park on Friday, May 7 and help out Cypress then I hope you do so. Please share this with your friends!

Fricker Night

Don’t forget to be inworld tonight 7pm SLT to hear Fricker Fraker – a wonderful person and a phenomenal flautist, playing native American flute music. Fricker will perform an Awakening ceremony at the Clocktree .
